With the nation more deeply divided than at any time since the Civil War, the paramount challenge for U.S. policymakers in 2021 and beyond lies at home. Unless Americans find ways to reunite their red and blue tribes, restore confidence in their democratic institutions, and provide equal opportunities for all citizens, America will flounder as it did in the 1850s, 1860s, and 1930s. With so much at stake, the Applied History Project is excited to highlight a new opportunity for scholars and students to help address the issue. Just last week, the Stanton Foundation launched a contest to reward what it judges the best Applied History essay that both clarifies the challenge of reuniting America and identifies initiatives the U.S. government or others could take to address it. The top entry, as judged by the Foundation, will win $10,000, and up to two runners-up (if applicable) will win $5,000. Essays of 1,000 to 5,000 words, drawing from the history of the U.S. or other nations, will be accepted until July 4. An advisory panel including historians from the Harvard Kennedy School, Stanford’s Hoover Institution, and the University of Chicago will assist in screening.
